February 20th Race Meeting Report

Race 1
The first HQ race was in fact the qualifying "race" and comprised a dubiously arranged grid to say the least. Paul Sampey did not appear so the field was a small 17 cars. It soon became 16 with the withdrawal of Steve Raisin in the early stages. Peter Brown although not the pole starter soon assumed his usual number one position and led from start to finish. Darren Peat and Tony James were having a good tussle when Darren came unstuck at Novus and lost several places. Mike Annette suffered gear problems exiting Shell and dropped back although he was able to complete the race. The usual performance of running dead at the start to get in some fast flying laps was again tried on by one or two drivers. Maybe we should have qualifying OR racing as from a spectator's point of view the "race" was a bit tedious. It must be said however, that Gordon Bateup was far from dull to watch and put in a great drive both during the race and also at the finishing line where he managed to outdo Roger. Onya Gordon.

Race 2
Again Peter Brown ably put his mark on the entire event. On lap 2 Jeff Watt had a dusty excursion off Shell and at the same time Chris Farr scored a flat right rear tyre which ended his race. Lap 3 was a procession, but for a little stoush between Neill Woodward, Ken Shufflebotham and Richard Spivey. Mike Annette had a coming together with the tyres when coming in for a stop-go and only had astop instead. From here on the dice of the race was between John Borich and Darren Peat and this continued throughout the remainder of the race a fine and fair contest from both drivers. Lap 6 saw Brian Bondi have a quick spin off the inside of Shell. He recovered, but only after the field had left him a long way behind. Speaking of a long way behind, the big effort of the race was put in by Steve Raisin who started rear of field after his no-go in race 1. He blasted his way through the field to achieve an eventual fifth place. During lap 9 Fred Nelson got over excited and ran off into the sand on Yokohama, handing his place over to Ryan Barnes. Ryan in his second meeting did everything rigt and upset no-one. Ken Shuffs had an off in lap 10 just to add some interest to the end of the race and the procession ended with Peter Brown leading in Wayne Morfett, John Borich, Darren Peat, Steve Raisin and Jeff Watt.

Race 3
This was one for friends and rellies only, not really a big buzz for the spectators. Mike Annette was a non starter and as usual the seemingly unbeatable Peter Brown led from start to finish. Gordon ran off in Shell and retired with wheel damage. Darren Peat put in another excellent performance finishing in front of John Borich and untimately in fourth place overall. Chris Farr worked his way from last on the grid to eighth with a good steady drive. Peter Brown won comfortably followed by Wayne Morfett, Steve Raisin, Darren Peat, Jeff Watt, John Borich and Tony James.
