Peter Brown wins State Championship

In a dramatic finale to the 1998/99 Season, Peter Brown won his first State Championship in the HQ Holden division on Sunday 15th August, 1999.

The 45th Annual WA Sporting Car Club Championship meeting featured 3 rounds of the Boilergenics HQ Holden Championship Series, instead of the usual one. Although Peter Brown commenced the day's events with a 46 point lead over Wayne Morfett, this meant that a total of 60 points was available to be won over the day. In order to secure his first Championship win Peter Brown had to win a minimum of 15 points over 3 races.

The Qualifying event was conducted in cold and wet conditions, with qualifying times being substantially slower than in previous meetings. Wayne Morfett took pole position for each of the days events with a time of 1:23.7166, with Peter Brown second with a time of 1:23.8552. This grid provided for an exciting finish to the season.

In the first Championship Race of the day, an 8 Lap event, Peter Brown made another fast start to pull along side Wayne Morfett by the time they reached CAT Corner, however Wayne Morfett was able to pull away through the Esses by holding the inside line. Down into the Basin for the first time, Peter Brown drew along side Wayne Morfett and was marginally infront by the time both cars reached he end of Simico Straight. Although Wayne Morfett exited Novus Corner first, Peter Brown took the inside line down Dunlop Straight to pull along side Wayne Morfett. Morfett subsequently changed his racing line to retain front position into CAT Corner. Peter Brown's engine developed a misfire, and the race finished with Morfett winning, Brown second and John Borich third. Peter Brown recorded the fastest lap with a time of 1:16.5005 (113.65 km/h) on lap 8. With 16 points for his second place finish, Peter Brown was the new State Champion for 1998/99.

In the second race Wayne Morfett quickly moved into the lead, with Peter Brown dropping back from second to third position behind Tony James in the first lap as his engine continued to misfire. The race continued in this order until the last lap when Peter Brown's engine lost power rapidly coming out of the Basin for the last time. He crawled to the finishing line , but still managed to record a sixth place finish. The race was won by Wayne Morfett, with Tony James second and John Borich third. On this occasion, Wayne Morfett recorded the fastest lap with a time of 1:22.9793 (104.77 km/h) on lap 8.

After being towed back into the Pit area, the Peter Brown Racing crew quickly assessed the damage and determined a blown head gasket was the problem. With the scrutineers present, the engine was stripped down and a new head gasket installed. During the installation, however, a head bolt stripped its thread, and could not be secured in the little time remaining.

Peter Brown took his ailing car to the starting grid, uncertain as to whether he would finish the final event. Although he had won sufficient points to secure his first State Title, it was important for Peter to show his fans why he was the new Number One HQ driver in Western Australia. Both Wayne Morfett and Peter Brown made a good start to the final race, with Wayne Morfett's inside position proving to be decisive into CAT Corner. Peter Brown was all over Wayne Morfett as they charged away from the rest of the field through the Esses and into Shell Corner. Through the Basin for the first time, Peter Brown took advantage of an inside position to move into first place. Out of the Basin and onto Simico Straight Peter Brown increased his lead over Wayne Morfett and won the race by more than 500 metres, from Morfett and James. Once more Peter Brown recorded the fastest lap with a time of 1:16.3315 (113.90 km/h) on lap 2.

Peter Brown was the new State Champion, with 176 points for the 1998/99 season. Former State Champion Wayne Morfett was second with 142 points, and Tony James was third with 100 points.
