HQ Holdens

HQ Holden Racing
Developed by the Australian division of the General Motors Corporation, the Holden was launched in November 1948 as Australia's own car. The Holden's rugged strength and reliability in the tough Australian outback ensured it was the largest selling car in Australia for more than 30 years. Its "affordability" also enabled a new generation of enthusiasts to experience the thrill of motor racing in sedan style cars in preference to the more expensive open wheeler style racing cars.

The HQ Holden was first released in July 1971. It represented the sixth major model change since the first Holden was launched, although each major model change had one or two additional model updates. The HQ Holden was sold in sedan, station wagon, utility (light truck) and panel van body styles, and production continued until the release of the HJ series in October 1974

The concept of a dedicated race series for HQ Holdens developed in Tasmania where a group of enthusiasts recognised the need to re-introduce a more affordable form of motor racing to attract the average man in the street back to the sport.

The first official HQ Holden race was conducted at the Baskerville circuit in October 1988, with the concept spreading quickly to Victoria where their first HQ race was conducted at the Winton circuit in August 1989. By 1996, HQ Holdens were racing in all states and territories in Australia, and also in New Zealand where some 100 cars were regularly competing.
